The Gardman Story

From the moment Gardman was founded in 1992 by Paris Natar, the company was very successful, achieving sales of £1.4 million by the end of its first financial year.  Its turnover has now reached £80 million and Gardman is firmly established as the UK’s leading supplier of 4,000 growing, garden living, wild bird care and pet care products to garden centres.

In December 2007, Barclays Private Equity, the pan European and mid market private equity house, acquired a major stake in Gardman and four years later Equistone took over the management of Barclays Private Equity Funds through an MBO.  In December 2012 Gardman successfully completed a financial restructuring of its group. The restructuring, which involved its four operating companies in the UK, the USA and Australia being acquired by a new parent company, GGML Ltd, which is in turn owned by Gardman Group Limited, included a balance sheet restructuring and a substantial reduction in the Group’s debt.

Innovation, innovation, innovation

We are generally recognised as the most active developer of innovative garden products in the industry and we have successfully launched completely new categories such as WallArt, water features and pet care. 

We launch new wild bird care and pet care ranges in May and June to the trade for delivery in August.  This ensures that our customers benefit from the autumn and winter sales of wild bird care products. Garden growing and garden living products are launched to the trade in September for delivery in January so that our customers are set up for an early spring.

Gardman is one of the biggest and most regular exhibitors at Glee, the garden industry’s foremost exhibition held at the NEC in September.

Logistic statistics

As well as our showroom in Peterborough, we have a head office that is based at our new site also in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, and we have production, packaging and distribution facilities in Kings Lynn.

With a total warehouse capacity of over 700,000 sq ft, we have £60 million (at retail value) worth of stock ready to be delivered at any given time.  Our goal is to despatch 97% of all orders on time, every time.  This may help to explain why our garden centre customers have voted us Supplier of the Year eight times.

Export and international business

Gardman (Australia) Pty is a 50:50 joint venture with Brunnings Garden Products, established in 2007.  In 2012, Gardman appointed World Source Partners as its exclusive importer and distributor of Gardman products for the USA, Canada and Mexico. 

We export to over 35 countries with international sales accounting for 16% of group turnover.
